Powered two-wheelers: missing from the Paris list
The Crédit Municipal de Paris publishes a detailed list of accepted items, from jewellery to graded Pokémon cards. Motorbikes, scooters and mopeds do not appear on it, even though the same list expressly accepts bicycles.
Bordeaux: vehicles considered too bulky
In its FAQ, the Bordeaux institution refuses items that are too bulky and gives vehicles as the first example. A motorbike, even one with a small engine, logically falls under this exclusion, and the institution publishes no exception for two-wheelers.
Nantes: a mention still to be confirmed
The meta description of the "Vintage car" page of the Crédit Municipal de Nantes mentions a motorbike alongside the collector car and the lorry. The body text only talks about cars: written confirmation from the institution is essential.
If Nantes accepts: the storage rules
For its vintage vehicles, the Nantes institution entrusts storage to its auctioneers in a suitable facility, charges interest pro rata for each month started and extends by six-month periods after appraisal, with fixed charges that are not publicly quantified.
The Dijon lead
The joint website of the Crédits Municipaux carries an article whose title presents vehicle pawn loans as exclusive to Nantes and Dijon. The text has not been read: the Dijon institution must state for itself whether it accepts two-wheelers.
Bicycles, on the other hand, are accepted
A useful paradox to know: a bicycle can be deposited at the Crédit Municipal de Paris, which includes it on its official list. The conditions for a bicycle pawn loan follow this logic of an item that can be carried by hand.
What the non-possessory pledge covers
The registration regime for vehicle pledges, reformed by ordinance no. 2021-1192, covers any registered land motor vehicle, and therefore motorbikes. The owner keeps the machine and may go on riding it throughout the secured credit.
Register, deadline and duration of the entry
Since decree no. 2023-97, published in the Journal officiel of 15 February 2023, the pledge has been recorded in an electronic register of the Ministry of the Interior. Without a reply within seven days, the entry is deemed made, for five extendable years.
Who can register this pledge
The registration request comes from the creditor, directly or through an authorised credit institution or financing company. An individual therefore cannot use it alone: you need a lender willing to accept the motorbike as security for its credit.
Leasing: financing, not borrowing
Equipment leasing under article L313-7 of the Code monétaire et financier, carried out on a regular basis by authorised institutions under article L515-2, is used to acquire a vehicle. It does not release cash on a motorbike that has already been paid for.
The Civil Code articles on vehicle pledges
The Civil Code contains a section devoted to pledges over a motor vehicle, in articles 2351 to 2353. Their wording following the 2021 reform has not been reread here: consult Légifrance or a professional before committing yourself.
Which conventional pledge options remain
With no institution accepting the motorbike, the remaining route is to pledge another item of value, such as jewellery or a watch. To find out whether your item is accepted, also compare with pawning a car and the network of French Crédits Municipaux.
Institutions and references for a motorbike
- Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux: Excludes vehicles from its pledges on the grounds that they are too bulky to store.
- Crédit Municipal de Nantes: Pawn loan offer for vintage cars; the motorbike is only mentioned in the meta description.
- Crédit Municipal de Paris: List of accepted items that includes bicycles but no motorbike or scooter.
- Banque de France: Describes equipment leasing, financial rental and lease-back in its sheet 415.
Checking the options for your motorbike
- Write to the Crédit Municipal de Nantes stating the make, model, year and condition of the motorbike, and ask for a written reply.
- Also contact the Dijon institution, named alongside Nantes for vehicles by the joint website of the Crédits Municipaux.
- If refused, ask your bank for credit secured by a non-possessory pledge entered in the ministry register.
- Compare the total cost of that credit with a pawn loan secured on a piece of jewellery or a watch.
- Before signing anything, check that the lender is a Crédit Municipal or an authorised credit institution.
Cost benchmarks for a motorbike
| Solution | Known charges | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Pawn loan in Nantes, if accepted | Interest pro rata for months started, plus fixed charges | Vintage car page, August 2025 |
| Pawn loan, maximum amount | Two thirds of the valuation | Art. D514-8 CMF |
| Non-possessory pledge | According to the lender's offer | Decree no. 2023-97 |
| Leasing or financial rental | According to the institution's scale | Banque de France, sheet 415 |
Documents to prepare for an application
- Registration document of the motorbike in your name
- Photo identity document
- Proof of address less than three months old
- Purchase and servicing invoices for the two-wheeler
- Recent photographs of the motorbike for an initial written request
Pitfalls with a motorbike as security
- Riding up to a Paris branch on your motorbike, when the Crédit Municipal de Paris list accepts none.
- Taking the Nantes meta description for a firm offer, without written confirmation from the institution about two-wheelers.
- Accepting a motorbike "pawn loan" offered by a private individual or an unauthorised company, outside the institutions' monopoly.
- Forgetting that with a non-possessory pledge, the debt remains if the sale of the motorbike does not cover the credit.
What riders ask
Can a motorbike be pledged at the Crédit Municipal?
No institution consulted confirms it. Paris does not list motorbikes, Bordeaux refuses vehicles, and Nantes only mentions the motorbike in the technical description of its vintage car page. A written request to Nantes or Dijon remains the only route.
Is a scooter accepted for a pawn loan?
The published lists mention no scooter. It is a land motor vehicle, subject to the same size-based refusals as a motorbike in Bordeaux. Only bicycles appear explicitly among the items accepted in Paris.
How can I borrow with my motorbike as security?
Through credit backed by a non-possessory pledge, registered by the creditor in the Ministry of the Interior register. You keep the motorbike. It is not a pawn loan: the lender sets the conditions and the debt remains in the event of default.
Does a classic motorbike stand a better chance of being accepted?
It is the only plausible case, since Nantes targets vintage and collector vehicles. The institution, however, publishes no age criterion or amount, and the body of its page only discusses cars: you need to ask it directly.
