Ordinary book or collectible book
Article D514-1 of the Code monétaire et financier covers goods capable of significant value and in a good state of preservation. A paperback novel has no standing at auction; a first edition, a limited printing or a signed binding may well have one.
The Paris entry for collectible books
The Crédit Municipal de Paris includes collectible books on its official list of items accepted as a pledge. No rule on number, format or edition date is published there: assessment is made case by case, during the appointment.
The rare Pléiade example in Bordeaux
The Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux accepts collectible books in good condition and gives the example of a rare edition from La Pléiade. A complete set of recent volumes, on the other hand, does not necessarily possess that sought-after rarity.
Reims: books, stamps and records
The Crédit Municipal de Reims mentions collectible books alongside stamps and records. Its appraiser is present on Mondays from 11 am to noon, except in August, and the institution advises calling before bringing a specialist item.
Toulouse and institutions silent on books
The Toulouse pre-contractual sheet, posted online in April 2022, does not mention books, but its list is not exhaustive. Elsewhere, the absence of a mention is not a refusal: the method is described in the guide to checking whether your item is accepted as a pledge.
Two-thirds ceiling for a volume
Since a book is neither gold, silver nor platinum, article D514-8 caps the loan at two thirds of its valuation. A volume valued at €900 can therefore secure no more than €600, before each institution's own policy is applied.
What the appraiser looks at
The condition of the binding, corners and pages, the presence of foxing, an inscribed dedication or an original dust jacket all affect the auction price. The appraisal follows the principle described in the guide to the valuation of a pledged item.
Paper and bookworms: an exclusion to know
The general terms of the Crédit Municipal de Paris, in force on 1 May 2026, do not compensate damage caused by insects, worms or temperature changes. For old paper, this clause directly concerns preservation during the loan.
Sales combining music, books and paintings
The CMP has already held a sale titled Music, Books, Paintings, Objects. An unredeemed book joins this kind of session; the hammer price repays the debt, 15% sale fees are deducted, and then the surplus is held for two years.
Price of a small loan on a book
For a loan of between €30 and €500, for example on a single volume, the Crédit Municipal de Paris displays an APR of 4.25% and charges no storage fee. Early repayment is calculated pro rata temporis, without penalty.
Pawning an entire library
For a collection of volumes, the Crédit Municipal de Paris requires proof of income once the loan reaches €10,000. It is best to state the nature and size of the collection when booking the appointment online.
Books and works on paper
A single engraving or a reproduction is not treated as a book: Bordeaux refuses engravings and reproductions. Drawings and lithographs follow the rules set out in the guide to pawning paintings in France.
Institutions that take collectible books
- Crédit Municipal de Paris: Accepts collectible books and has held a music, books, paintings and objects sale.
- Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux: Takes collectible books in good condition, for example a rare edition from La Pléiade.
- Crédit Municipal de Reims: Accepts collectible books, stamps and records; appraiser present on Mondays in the late morning.
Pawning old books
- Select the rare or signed volumes in good condition, and note the publisher, date and particular features of each.
- Call the institution or book online, specifying that you have collectible books to be valued.
- Carry the books protected from damp and present yourself with identification, proof of address and bank details.
- Let the appraiser examine bindings, pages and dedications, then review the valuation and the loan offered.
- Sign the contract, keep the pawn ticket and repay before maturity to get your books back.

Frequent mistakes with pawned books
- Bringing boxes of ordinary books in the hope of a loan, when only collectible volumes in good condition are accepted.
- Presenting a cut-out engraving or a reproduction as a bibliophile item, which Bordeaux explicitly refuses.
- Forgetting that damage caused by insects or damp is not compensated under the Paris terms.
- Selling a rare book to a second-hand dealer in a hurry when a temporary loan would have let you keep it.
- Going to Reims without phoning, outside the Monday session, with a volume that needs an appraiser.
Your questions about pawned books
Can old books be pawned?
Yes, if they are collectible books in good condition. Paris, Bordeaux and Reims accept them. The appraiser sets a valuation based on public sales, and the loan is capped at two thirds of that valuation by the Code monétaire et financier.
Does a Pléiade collection have pledge value?
Bordeaux cites the example of a rare edition from La Pléiade. The rarity of the volume, its condition and its jacket determine the valuation; ordinary recent volumes generally fetch little at auction, which limits the possible loan.
How much does a loan on a collectible book cost?
In Paris, a loan of €30 to €500 is displayed at an APR of 4.25% with no storage fee, and from €501 to €6,000 at 9.90%. The regional institutions publish their own scales, to be consulted before depositing.
What happens to a pawned book that is not repaid?
It is sold at auction, possibly in a sale combining music, books and paintings as the Crédit Municipal de Paris has done. The price repays the debt and fees; the remainder, the surplus (boni), stays claimable by the borrower for two years.
