Each institution sets its own schedule
There is no national rate: Service-Public explains that each Crédit Municipal decides its own and may add storage charges to it. To understand the mechanisms they share, the page on calculating pawn loan interest is a good starting point.
The Paris schedule as at 9 October 2026
The Crédit Municipal de Paris shows three bands: 4.25% from 30 to 500 euros, 9.90% from 501 to 6,000 euros, then 5.30% from 6,001 euros. These annual percentage rates, recorded on 9 October 2026, include storage.
No storage fee below 500 euros in Paris
The 1% storage fee does not apply to Paris loans of less than 500 euros. Small loans therefore enjoy the lowest rate on the schedule, while the two higher bands build this percentage into their APR.
Interest counted day by day
Under the Paris general terms of 1 May 2026, interest and storage fees are calculated daily, from signature until redemption or the due date, and are paid at that point. Redeeming after three months costs roughly a quarter of the yearly amount.
Repaying early, with no penalty
Both the Crédit Municipal de Paris and Service-Public confirm that early repayment is possible at any time without compensation. The charge is worked out pro rata temporis, which makes a pawn loan well suited to a cash need lasting a few weeks.
Strasbourg publishes worked figures
The FAQ of the Crédit Municipal de Strasbourg, updated on 22 July 2023, gives three six-month cases: 30 euros borrowed become 30.15 euros, 100 euros become 106 euros and 2,000 euros become 2,084 euros.
Bordeaux: a four-band schedule
The Bordeaux price sheet of 15 November 2022, which may have been revised since, provided for a zero APR up to 100 euros, 14.81% up to 3,000 euros, 9.85% up to 6,000 euros and 5.10% beyond, according to the Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux.
Hallmarking fees for metals
Again according to the 2022 Bordeaux sheet, the borrower bears hallmarking fees of 6 euros for gold, 4 euros for silver and 9 euros for platinum. These fixed amounts weigh proportionally more on a small piece of jewellery than on an ingot.
What a missed due date costs
In Paris, each fortnight or part fortnight after the due date triggers a penalty of 0.50% of the capital, capped at twelve fortnights, or 6% at most. It is therefore better to request a renewal before the deadline than to let arrears build up.
Charges linked to the auction
If the item is sold, Paris keeps 15% of the hammer price as sale costs; withdrawing a lot costs 5% of the valuation. The 2022 Bordeaux sheet provided for a 10% sale preparation charge payable by the borrower.
Mandatory display in branches
Since 2016, article D514-8-1 of the Code monétaire et financier has required fifteen categories of information, including the annual effective rate and fees, to be displayed at reception. Service-Public adds that the contract itself must state the APR and the total amount owed.
Estimating your cost before the appointment
Applying the Paris schedule over twelve months, borrowing 300 euros costs roughly 12.75 euros, 5,000 euros roughly 495 euros and 25,000 euros roughly 1,325 euros. For a shorter period, simply scale these down, since interest accrues daily.

Estimating the cost of your loan
- Find the amount band your planned loan falls into on the institution's schedule.
- Multiply the capital by the corresponding annual APR to get the cost over twelve months.
- Scale that cost to the number of days the item will remain in pledge.
- Add any fixed charges, such as hallmarking of precious metals in Bordeaux.
- Compare the result with the total amount shown in the contract before signing.

Where to find the applicable rate
- Price schedule displayed at the institution's reception
- Pre-contractual information sheet
- Contract showing the APR and the total owed
- General terms of the pawn loan
- Identity document and proof of address to open the file
Mistakes that push up the bill
- Borrowing 520 euros instead of 490 euros in Paris: you move into the 9.90% band with storage fees instead of 4.25%.
- Relying on another institution's schedule, when Bordeaux and Paris show very different rates for the same amount.
- Letting the due date pass and paying up to 6% of the capital in penalties instead of renewing on time.
- Forgetting that the 15% sale costs reduce the surplus if the item is not redeemed in the end.
- Failing to repay early a loan you no longer need, even though doing so carries no penalty.
