Can you pledge your car at the Crédit Municipal?

As a general rule, a car cannot be deposited as a pledge at a Crédit Municipal: Paris does not list it and Bordeaux considers it too bulky; Nantes is the exception for vintage and collector cars.

Why most institutions refuse cars

In its FAQ, the Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux rules out items that are "too bulky", naming vehicles and furniture specifically. The institution is therefore not in a position to keep a car for the whole term of the contract, whatever its value.

No cars on the Paris list

The official list of accepted items of the Crédit Municipal de Paris mentions no motor vehicle. It does, however, include bicycles, which suggests that the limit lies in size and storage, not in the fact that the item has wheels.

The Nantes exception for collector cars

The Crédit Municipal de Nantes offers a "Vintage car pawn loan", reserved for vintage and collector models. The page, updated on 4 August 2025, publishes no minimum age, amount or rate: everything is set after appraisal.

How Nantes keeps the vehicle

The vehicle is not kept at the branch but with the institution's auctioneers, in a suitable facility. Collection is by appointment booked at least two days in advance, which rules out an improvised same-day redemption.

Cost and extension in Nantes

Interest there is calculated pro rata for each month started, and each extension lasts six months with a fresh appraisal. "Fixed charges" are added, with no published amount: ask for the complete scale before signing.

Dijon, the other institution mentioned

An article on the joint website of the Crédits Municipaux presents vehicle pawn loans as an exclusive offer of the Nantes and Dijon institutions. As its content has not been verified, ask the Dijon institution directly before making any trip.

The legal framework: tangible movable property

In law, a car remains tangible movable property, the category covered by article D514-1 of the Code monétaire et financier. The institutions' refusal therefore stems from their internal rules and storage capacity, not from any general legal prohibition.

The non-possessory vehicle pledge

The closest alternative is the non-possessory pledge over a registered land motor vehicle, introduced by ordinance no. 2021-1192 and decree no. 2023-97 of 14 February 2023. You keep the car and carry on driving it during the credit.

Registration with the Ministry of the Interior

The pledge is entered in an electronic register kept by the Ministry of the Interior, at the creditor's request. The ministry has seven days, its silence counts as registration, and the entry remains valid for five years, with extension possible.

Not to be confused with a pawn loan

This non-possessory pledge secures credit granted by a creditor, on terms that creditor sets, and the grantor must own the vehicle. An institution's pawn loan, by contrast, does not check income and leaves no debt if the item is sold.

Leasing and lease with purchase option

The Banque de France points out that equipment leasing, defined in article L313-7 of the Code monétaire et financier, is an irrevocable rental combined with a promise to sell. It finances the purchase of a car, but does not allow you to borrow against a vehicle you already own.

And outside France

The rules differ in neighbouring countries: see car pawn loans in Belgium or the vehicle pledge in Switzerland. In France, the list of items accepted as a pledge remains the reference before approaching an institution.

Institutions and legal texts for borrowing against a car

Procedure for pledging a vintage car

  1. Check that the vehicle really falls into the vintage or collector category, the only one covered by the Nantes offer.
  2. Contact the Nantes or Dijon institution to find out the conditions, the fixed charges and the storage location.
  3. Gather the registration certificate, ID, proof of address and any maintenance or restoration history.
  4. Have the car appraised by the institution's auctioneers, then sign the contract and receive the funds.
  5. To extend, request a new six-month period, accompanied by a fresh appraisal of the vehicle.
  6. To recover the car, repay and book an appointment at least two days before collection.

Common misunderstandings about pledging a car

Common questions from motorists

Can I take my car to the Mont-de-Piété?

At most institutions, no: Paris lists no vehicle and Bordeaux refuses items that are too bulky. The Crédit Municipal de Nantes does, however, have an offer for vintage and collector cars, which are kept with its auctioneers.

How can I borrow while keeping my car?

Through credit secured by a non-possessory vehicle pledge, entered in the Ministry of the Interior register under decree no. 2023-97. The creditor requests registration, valid for five years. You keep using the vehicle but remain liable if a sale falls short.

Can a motorhome or a van be pledged?

No institution consulted publishes an offer for these vehicles. The meta description of the Nantes page mentions a lorry, but the body text does not confirm it. Only a written request to the Nantes institution can settle the matter.

What happens if I do not repay a loan on my collector car?

As with any pledge at a Crédit Municipal, the unredeemed item is sold at public auction. If the price exceeds the sums owed, the excess, called the surplus (boni), comes back to you; if it is lower, the institution claims nothing more.
