Antique or designer furniture: is it accepted as a pledge?

Furniture can only be pawned in France if it is a period or designer piece with an auction market: the Crédit Municipal de Paris accepts it, Toulouse names only small pieces, and the loan remains limited to two thirds of the valuation.

The category used by Paris

The Crédit Municipal de Paris accepts period or designer furniture, under a heading that also includes rugs. No rule on size or weight is published; a recent mass-produced piece does not fall within this definition.

Small pieces only in Toulouse

The pre-contractual sheet of the Crédit Municipal de Toulouse, posted online in April 2022, names only small furniture among accepted items, in a non-exhaustive list. An imposing chest of drawers or a bookcase therefore calls for a prior discussion with the branch.

Bordeaux: antiques and ornaments, no furniture listed

The list published by the Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux does not mention furniture; it does, however, admit antiques and old ornaments in good condition. A pedestal table or a period clock is more likely to fall into that category, to be confirmed on site.

The legal good-condition requirement

Article D514-1 of the Code monétaire et financier requires goods of significant value in a good state of preservation. Lifting veneer, a reglued leg or marquetry with missing parts lower the valuation, or even lead to the piece being refused.

Two thirds of the valuation at most

Under article D514-8, any goods other than gold, silver or platinum cannot secure more than two thirds of their estimated value. A designer armchair valued at €3,000 would thus allow borrowing of €2,000 at most.

Woodworm, an uncompensated risk

The CMP general terms as of 1 May 2026 exclude any compensation for damage caused by insects, worms, oxidation or temperature changes. For an old solid wood piece, this point must be weighed before depositing.

Transport and prior appointment

Jewellery is often deposited without an appointment, but furniture requires contact first: Paris offers online booking and the invoice is strictly compulsory for certain categories. The required documents are listed in the documents needed for a pawn loan.

The CC ART storage facilities

The Crédit Municipal de Paris relies on CC ART, a brand created in September 2018, which claims 3,600 m² of secure storage and more than a million items kept. Ask at the appointment where and under what conditions your piece will be stored.

Cost of a furniture-backed loan

For a loan of between €501 and €6,000, the Crédit Municipal de Paris displays an APR of 9.90%, including a 1% storage fee; from €6,001, the displayed rate drops to 5.30%.

Regulated term and early redemption

Article D514-7 sets a maximum term of two years, extensions included, and allows the borrower to redeem the pledge before maturity. Paris lends for one renewable year, with a possible revaluation of the piece at each renewal.

Furniture, rugs and decorative objects

Rugs, grouped under the same Paris heading, are subject to a €4,000 loan threshold and a quarantine, explained in the guide to pawning rugs in France. Bronzes and ornaments follow the rules for art objects.

If the piece goes to auction

An unredeemed piece of furniture is sold at public auction. In Paris, each sale is announced at least ten days beforehand, 15% of the hammer price is deducted and the surplus remains claimable for two years.

Getting a piece of furniture accepted

  1. Photograph the piece from every angle, note any signature, maker's stamp or label, and find its purchase invoice.
  2. Contact the institution with these photos to find out whether it accepts this type and size of furniture.
  3. Arrange secure transport to the place indicated, protecting fragile surfaces and removable parts.
  4. Present your identity papers, proof of address and bank details while the appraiser examines the piece.
  5. Accept the amount, capped at two thirds of the valuation, then keep the pawn ticket.
  6. Repay or renew before maturity, bearing in mind that the total term cannot exceed two years.

Questions about pawned furniture

Can furniture be pawned at the Crédit Municipal?

Yes, if it is period or designer furniture: the Crédit Municipal de Paris accepts it. Toulouse names only small pieces and Bordeaux does not mention furniture; each institution should therefore be asked before transporting the piece.

How much is lent on an antique piece of furniture?

The loan cannot exceed two thirds of the valuation, set by an appraiser according to the public sales market. State of preservation, authenticity and the presence of a maker's stamp or signature weigh heavily on that valuation.

Does the furniture have to be brought in?

Yes, a pawn loan involves handing the item over to the institution, which keeps it until repayment. For a bulky piece, contacting the institution first allows you to check acceptance and deposit arrangements before organising transport.

Is a designer sofa accepted as a pledge?

The Paris list accepts designer furniture without detailing which types are admitted. Acceptance will depend on the model's auction value and its condition; no institution consulted publishes a rule specific to upholstered seating.
