A branded watch as a pledge: guarantee, invoice and valuation

A watch from a major brand can secure a loan with a Crédit Municipal: the institution checks the guarantee card and invoice for a matching serial number, values the piece at auction prices and lends part of that value.

Watches on the official lists

The Crédit Municipal de Paris includes signed watches, pens and lighters among accepted items. Nantes mentions clocks and watches, Toulouse watches, Nîmes branded watches: the institutions consulted therefore all take timepieces as pledges.

The houses named by Bordeaux

The Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux targets watches from major brands with a certificate and names Rolex, Breitling, Cartier and Chanel. A watch without a recognised signature has little standing at auction and does not fit this category.

Serial number: the decisive check

Bordeaux requires a guarantee card whose serial number or reference matches the watch, plus a purchase invoice showing that number, the brand and a description or photo. A discrepancy of a single digit can be enough to block the deposit.

Monthly appraisal days in Nîmes

At the Crédit Municipal de Nîmes, designer watches are valued by an auctioneer, free of charge and by appointment, on an appraisal day held once a month at the branch. The deposit date therefore needs planning.

Watch or jewellery: which ceiling

Article D514-8 reserves the four-fifths ceiling for gold, silver or platinum valued by weight; any other item is limited to two thirds. Bordeaux restates both ceilings in its tariff sheet of 15 November 2022.

Rough size of the amount lent

The Crédit Municipal de Paris says it lends around 60% of the estimated value, up to 80% for certain items, based on the public auction market. The method is explained in the guide to the valuation of a pledged item.

Cost of a loan on a luxury watch

For a watch borrowing €5,000, the Paris scale at an APR of 9.90% gives around €495 of interest over a year. Above €6,000, the displayed rate falls to 5.30%, storage fees included.

Toulouse and Nantes: loan terms

Toulouse lends for six months, renewable as long as the interest is paid. Nantes, which mentions clocks, watches and silverware, mainly publishes an amount lent per gram of gold. For a watch, only the branch valuation sets the sum available.

Signed pens and lighters in the same deposit

Paris groups signed watches, pens and lighters under one heading. A pen from a major brand can therefore accompany the watch to the counter; ask the assessor how the institution values and combines several items in a single contract.

The jewellery and watches sales

An unredeemed watch joins the CMP's themed sales devoted to jewellery and watches, with catalogues existing for June 2024 and December 2025. Sale fees reach 15% of the hammer price; details are in the auction of pledged items.

Revaluation on a Paris renewal

The one-year Paris contract is renewed against payment of the interest and fees due, with a possible new valuation. If the reference's market value has fallen meanwhile, the borrower must repay the part of the loan exceeding the new value.

Comparing with watches pawned in Switzerland

Geneva and Zurich have their own pawn lending establishments, subject to Swiss law. The differences in term and pricing are presented in the guide to pawning watches in Switzerland.

Where to pawn a watch in France

Pawning a watch step by step

  1. Gather the watch, its guarantee card, its purchase invoice and, if possible, its box and spare links.
  2. Compare the serial number engraved on the watch with the one on the card and invoice before you travel.
  3. Find out about appraisal days: in Nîmes, an auctioneer values watches once a month by appointment.
  4. Listen to the appraiser's valuation and the amount offered, then sign the contract if the terms suit you.
  5. Pay the interest at maturity to renew, or repay the principal to get your watch back.

Questions about a watch-backed loan

Can a Rolex be pawned at the Crédit Municipal?

Yes. Bordeaux expressly names Rolex among the major-brand watches it accepts, provided the guarantee card and an invoice with a matching number are presented. Paris accepts signed watches on its assessors' valuation.

How much is lent on a luxury watch?

There is no fixed scale: the appraiser values the watch according to prices achieved at public auction. Paris quotes around 60% of that valuation, sometimes up to 80%, and Bordeaux limits items other than precious metals valued by weight to two thirds.

Can a watch without papers be pawned?

In Bordeaux, no: the guarantee card and invoice are required. Strasbourg also asks for an invoice in the depositor's name and a certificate; the other institutions consulted publish no rule as strict, so it is wise to call the branch before taking an undocumented watch there.

Where are unredeemed watches sold?

At the Crédit Municipal de Paris, they join the auctions dedicated to jewellery and watches, announced at least ten days in advance with a catalogue. The surplus (boni) left after repaying the debt and fees goes to the borrower.
