Pawning luxury and gold watches in Brussels

The Brussels Mont-de-Piété accepts all gold watches, even damaged ones, and luxury watches in steel, ceramic or titanium if they work; the box and certificate of origin increase the amount lent, generally 50 to 70% of the valuation.

Watches and antique clocks, two categories

The official list distinguishes watches from antique clocks and watches, both among the 17 categories of the Mont-de-Piété of the City of Brussels. Branded wristwatches and gold pocket watches come under the watches page.

Gold accepted whatever the condition

Any gold watch, including a pocket watch, is accepted whatever its condition. A piece that has stopped, is scratched or has a cracked crystal can therefore be presented, as its precious metal is still taken into account by the appraisers.

Steel, ceramic, titanium: must be working

For a luxury watch in another material, the rule changes: it must work and be in good overall condition. A steel watch that has stopped does not meet the published conditions, unlike its gold equivalent.

The brands named by the institution

The indicative list includes Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Breitling, Cartier, Hublot, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lange & Söhne, Omega, Panerai, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tudor and Vacheron Constantin, as well as fashion and jewellery houses such as Chanel, Hermès or Piaget. This list remains indicative, not exhaustive.

Age, movement, case, authenticity

The appraisers apply four decisive criteria: the watch's age, the condition of the movement, the condition of the case and authenticity. These elements determine the estimated public auction value, the basis of the amount offered to the depositor.

Box and papers, a real plus

According to the watches page, bringing the original certificate and box increases the amount offered. These items also help establish authenticity, a criterion on which the institution makes no compromise for branded watches.

The case of quartz watches

The battery of a quartz watch that is not made of gold must not be flat. Having the battery replaced before the deposit prevents a steel watch from being judged out of order during the examination at the counter.

No tolerance for copies

At the slightest doubt about the authenticity of a branded watch, the appraisers refuse, for a loan as for a sale. Heavily imitated models are therefore best presented with their papers and, where it exists, the purchase invoice.

Amount lent and entry fees

The loan generally represents 50 to 70% of the estimated public auction value, with a file-opening fee of 3.5% capped at €60. For an expensive watch, this cap limits the upfront cost of the credit.

Keeping your watch pledged beyond six months

The contract lasts 180 days at 6.5% a year, then the rate rises to 10.5% from the first extension. The arrangements for extending remotely are detailed on the page on the term of a pawn loan in Belgium.

Watches and jewellery deposited together

A watch and jewellery can be deposited on the same day; partial redemption then allows the watch alone to be recovered by repaying its share. The rules specific to gold are on the page on pawning jewellery in Brussels.

Brussels compared with Swiss lenders

In Switzerland, a watchmaking country, pawning watches is handled by other institutions under other rules. Our page on pawning watches in Switzerland allows a comparison with what the Brussels Mont-de-Piété offers.

Preparing a watch for appraisal

  1. Check that the watch works if it is not gold, and replace the battery of a quartz model.
  2. Find the original box, the certificate and, if possible, the purchase invoice.
  3. Ask for a preliminary valuation by photo, stating the brand, reference and year of purchase.
  4. Present the watch at the counter with valid identification, without making an appointment.
  5. Accept the appraisers' offer or leave at no cost, then note the 180-day maturity date.

What goes with the watch

Missteps with a pawned watch

Pawned watches: the essentials

Does the Brussels Mont-de-Piété accept Rolex watches?

Yes, Rolex is on the indicative list of accepted brands, alongside Patek Philippe, Omega and Audemars Piguet. A steel Rolex must work and be in good condition, and the slightest doubt about its authenticity leads to refusal.

Can you pawn a watch that no longer works?

Yes if it is gold, pocket watches included: its condition matters little. For a luxury watch in steel, ceramic or titanium, on the other hand, it must work and be in good overall condition.

Is the original box compulsory to pawn a watch?

It is not presented as compulsory, but the Mont-de-Piété states that bringing the original box and certificate increases the amount offered. These items also help establish authenticity, a decisive criterion for branded watches.

What amount can you expect for a luxury watch in Brussels?

The Mont-de-Piété publishes no scale by watch reference. The appraisers estimate the public auction value according to age, movement, case and authenticity, and the loan then generally represents 50 to 70% of that valuation.
