An official category from the list of 17
On the page of accepted valuables, the wines and spirits heading sits alongside jewellery, watches and paintings. The full list of items accepted for pawning in Belgium shows where a wine cellar fits among the other goods admitted.
Classified grands crus and sought-after vintages
The Dutch version of the page, entitled Wijnen en geestrijke dranken, targets high-quality bottles: classified grands crus and vintage wines. An ordinary table wine, even one kept for a long time, does not match this official description.
Spirits too, subject to their rating
Spirits are admitted when they are of high quality, "met een goede beoordeling en in goede staat", meaning well rated and in good condition. The text names no particular whisky brand or cognac house.
A 1973 Petrus on display
To illustrate the category, the Mont-de-Piété shows a bottle of Petrus, Grand vin, Pomerol 1973. The example indicates the expected level: labels sought after on the secondary market, whose auction value can be assessed.
What the official page does not specify
No minimum quantity, no floor value and no storage requirement are published for wines. Rather than guessing, the Mont-de-Piété refers people to a prior appraisal, by telephone on 02/545 77 12 or through an online request.
Why contact the appraisers before coming
Carrying several cases to rue Saint-Ghislain without knowing whether they will be accepted risks a wasted round trip, or even breakages. For all items, the institution in fact advises contacting the appraisal department before travelling.
Amount lent on a wine collection
As with other pledges, the sum advanced generally represents 50 to 70% of the estimated auction value, with a minimum of €30. For bottles, the auction rating and their visible condition weigh directly on the offer.
Cost of credit secured on bottles
The fixed rate is 6.5% a year over 180 days, then 10.5% from the first extension, plus an administration fee capped at €60. The details appear on our page on the pawn loan interest rate in Belgium.
Wines go under the hammer too
A Mont-de-Piété auction featuring wines and spirits was held on 11 March 2025. An unredeemed lot joins these catalogued sales after a letter sent at least 30 days before it is listed.
Surplus and voluntary sale of a cellar
The surplus, that is the hammer price less the debt, goes entirely to the depositor. It is also possible, no earlier than one month after the loan, to request the sale of your bottles, subject to 10% seller's fees.
Brussels compared with the French institutions for wine
In France, several Crédit Municipal institutions also take grands crus, often by appointment with the auctioneer (commissaire-priseur), as in Strasbourg. The French arrangements are presented in our feature on pawning wine in France.
Who can pawn bottles in Brussels
You must be an adult or an emancipated minor, resident in the European Union, holding a valid identity document and the owner of the bottles. Neither nationality nor employment status is taken into account, the Mont-de-Piété FAQ states.
Institution to contact
- Mont-de-Piété de la Ville de Bruxelles: Belgium's only pawnbroker according to its website, accepting grands crus, vintage wines and well-rated spirits after appraisal.
Pledging a wine cellar, step by step
- Draw up an inventory of the bottles: appellation, vintage, size, fill level and condition of labels and capsules.
- Call the appraisers or send an online request to find out whether your selection can be accepted.
- Carry the bottles carefully to the lending counter at rue Saint-Ghislain, with your identity document.
- Receive the offer based on auction value and accept it, or leave with your bottles at no cost.
- Sign the 180-day contract and collect the sum, less the administration fee capped at €60.
- Before maturity, repay to recover the cellar or extend by telephone by paying interest and fees.

What to bring for a deposit of bottles
- Valid identity card or passport with residence in the European Union
- Proof of address if it does not appear on the identity document
- Purchase invoices or provenance documents for the bottles, if available
- Certified power of attorney to deposit another person's cellar
What makes a wine pledge fail
- Arriving unannounced with whole cases when the official page recommends a prior appraisal by telephone or online.
- Presenting everyday wines or spirits without a recognised rating, which do not meet the published high-quality criteria.
- Assuming a minimum quantity or precise storage conditions are published: nothing of the kind appears, and only the appraisal decides.
- Extending without recalculating the cost, when the rate rises from 6.5% to 10.5% a year from the first extension.
- Ignoring the letter announcing the public sale, sent at least 30 days before the bottles are entered in the catalogue.
Pawned wines and spirits: answers
Can wine be pawned in Belgium?
Yes. The Brussels Mont-de-Piété includes wines and spirits among its official categories. It targets classified grands crus, vintage wines and high-quality spirits that are well rated and in good condition, after a prior appraisal.
Is a minimum number of bottles needed to obtain a loan?
The official page states no minimum quantity or floor value specific to wines. The general minimum loan is €30. To know whether a selection is enough, contact the appraisers on 02/545 77 12 or use the online request.
Are whisky or cognac accepted at the Mont-de-Piété?
High-quality spirits are admitted if they have a good rating and are in good condition. No brand is listed: acceptance depends on case-by-case assessment, based on the value the bottle would reach at auction.
What happens if I do not repay a loan secured on wine?
The bottles are put up for public sale after a free letter sent at least 30 days beforehand. The proceeds cover capital, interest and fees; any surplus (boni) is paid to you, while a balance remains owed if the sale falls short.
