Pledging your Swiss watch in Geneva or Zurich

Pledging your Swiss watch in Geneva or Zurich

In Switzerland, the Geneva CPPG lends 10% to 25% of the value of a Swiss watch worth at least CHF 1,000, and the ZKB Pfandleihkasse accepts branded Swiss watches, with a certificate required from a CHF 3,000 purchase price.

Swiss watches only

Both public offices focus on Swiss watchmaking. The CPPG accepts Swiss watches in working order, quartz models included; the Pfandleihkasse of the Zürcher Kantonalbank takes branded Swiss watches for men and for women.

A CHF 1,000 floor in Geneva

The Geneva public pawn office (Caisse publique de prêts sur gages) sets a minimum value of CHF 1,000 for a watch. An entry-level piece valued below that will not be accepted, even if it is Swiss, new and supplied with all its papers.

From 10% to 25% depending on brand and condition

The lending ratio ranges from 10% to 25% of the value used, according to brand and condition. A sought-after reference in very good condition moves towards the top of the range, a less prized or visibly worn watch towards the bottom.

When the certificate becomes compulsory

In Geneva, an invoice or original certificate is required above CHF 5,000 and for certain brands. In Zurich, a certificate and receipt are needed from a purchase price of CHF 3,000, and the original packaging is preferred, though not mandatory.

The official example of a prestige-brand watch

The CPPG publishes a theoretical, non-contractual case: a prestige-brand watch with certificate, invoice, case and box, pawned for CHF 2,500 over 12 months at 7.5% a year. The pledge fee comes to CHF 150, or 6%.

What the first year costs

In this example, the borrower owes CHF 2,837.50 at the first due date: 2,500 in capital, 150 in pledge fee and 187.50 in interest. After an instalment of CHF 500, the balance carried forward falls to CHF 2,337.50.

Extending year after year

By repeating the CHF 500 instalment each year, the balance is down to CHF 1,288.50 after four extensions, again according to the CPPG. The renewal rules are set out under pawn loan duration in Switzerland.

The same watch in Zurich

The ZKB charges 1% a month. For CHF 2,500, that is CHF 25 a month, or CHF 150 over a 6-month contract, with no other charges if interest is paid on time in cash at the counter (calculated on the October 2026 tariff).

Quartz watch: remember the battery

The ZKB asks for clean items in working order; for a quartz watch, it advises replacing the battery if necessary before depositing it. A stopped watch risks being refused, as its movement cannot be checked at the counter.

Inspection and compliance on sale

If the watch is not redeemed, the CPPG auctions it with 10% sale charges plus inspection and compliance charges specific to watches and jewellery. The procedure is described under auctions of pledged items in Switzerland.

Where to go

In Geneva, the CPPG receives customers at rue des Glacis-de-Rive 5 and rue Adrien-Lachenal 6, Terrassière stop. In Zurich, the Pfandleihkasse is at Zurlindenstrasse 105 and opens all day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, mornings only on Tuesday and Thursday.

Pawning watches outside Switzerland

Pawning watches in France and pawning watches in Belgium follow the scales of the Crédit Municipal institutions and the Brussels Mont-de-Piété, with their own value thresholds and certificate or invoice requirements.

Offices that lend against watches

Pawning a watch

  1. Check that the watch is Swiss and, in Geneva, that it is worth at least CHF 1,000.
  2. Have the battery of a quartz watch replaced and clean the case and strap.
  3. Gather certificate, invoice, case and box; proof is required above CHF 5,000 in Geneva or from a CHF 3,000 purchase price in Zurich.
  4. Present the watch at the counter with your identity document and let the appraiser set the ratio.
  5. Choose the term, 6 or 12 months in Geneva, and keep the pawn ticket.
  6. Extend or redeem before the due date to avoid reminders and the auction.

Questions on pawned watches

How much is lent on a Rolex or an Omega in Switzerland?

The CPPG publishes no amount per brand: it lends 10% to 25% of the value used, depending on brand and condition. The ZKB uses internal values. Only a valuation at the counter, with papers, gives the exact figure.

Do you need the certificate to pawn a watch?

In Geneva, yes above CHF 5,000 and for certain brands; the invoice can replace it. In Zurich, a certificate and receipt are required from a purchase price of CHF 3,000, and the original packaging is preferred.

Is a quartz watch accepted as a pledge?

Yes, if it works. The CPPG states that battery-powered watches are accepted in working order, and the ZKB recommends replacing the battery if needed before coming to the Zurlindenstrasse counter.

Can a watch that is not Swiss be pawned?

Both public offices limit their offer to Swiss watches: the CPPG speaks of Swiss watches, the ZKB of branded Swiss watches. A watch from elsewhere is not on their lists of accepted items.
