What can you deposit at the Brussels Mont-de-Piété

The Brussels Mont-de-Piété lists 17 categories of items accepted as pledges, from jewellery and watches to paintings, wines and musical instruments; it publishes no list of refusals and invites people to contact its appraisers before coming in.

Nearly twenty families of items

The institution announces nearly 20 categories and details 17 of them on its official page. All concern portable movable goods, deposited in person at its premises in Rue Saint-Ghislain, in the heart of the Brussels Marolles district.

Jewellery, gold and fine jewellery

All gold jewellery is accepted, antique or modern, signed or not, as are creations from houses such as Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany & Co or Van Cleef & Arpels. Some Chanel and Christian Dior costume jewellery also appears on the list.

Diamonds and stones

Unmounted cut diamonds are accepted from 0.50 carat. Above 0.75 carat, mounted or not, the stone must come with an HRD, GIA or IGI certificate, and closed settings must be opened for testing.

Watches and antique clocks

Gold watches are accepted whatever their condition; those in steel, ceramic or titanium must be working. Antique clocks and watches form a separate category, and the brands are detailed on the page on pawning watches in Belgium.

Silverware, goldsmithing and silver plate

Cutlery sets and serving ware in solid silver are accepted if their total value is enough to offer a loan. For silver plate, only the Christofle brand is mentioned. Unsigned silver must weigh at least 300 g to reach the minimum loan.

Leather goods and luxury accessories

Bags, wallets, card holders and clutches by Chanel, Delvaux, Hermès and Louis Vuitton are accepted, as are belts from the last three houses. The purchase invoice is compulsory, and a CITES certificate is required for certain exotic leathers.

Paintings, sculptures and works of art

Signed paintings by artists present on the art market and sculptures in bronze, stone or metal by recognised artists are accepted. Above an estimated public auction value of €2,500, a certificate of authenticity becomes necessary for these works.

Ceramics, crystal, display pieces and furniture

The list also includes ceramics, crystal and glassware, display-cabinet pieces, furniture and numismatics, meaning coins and medals. Collectors' items, comic books and their related merchandise, as well as musical instruments, complete this wide-ranging set of categories.

Fine wines and spirits

Classified growths, vintage wines and highly rated spirits in good condition are on the list; the Dutch-language page shows a 1973 Petrus. Storage conditions are not specified, as our page on pawning wine in Belgium points out.

What does not appear on the list

No vehicle, car or motorbike, appears among the 17 categories, nor do electronic devices, and no official source mentions a public car pawn offer in Belgium. As the institution publishes no refusals, an absence does not amount to a written ban.

Authenticity, a common condition

Any designer item is refused as soon as the appraisers have the slightest doubt about its authenticity, whether for a loan or a sale. A valuation of a pawned item in Brussels by photo clears up these uncertainties.

The Brussels list and French lists

French Crédit Municipal institutions publish their own lists: the one in Bordeaux, for example, refuses furs, rugs, engravings, reproductions, ivory and coral. The detailed comparison is on the page on items accepted for pawning in France.

The institution that sets the list

Making sure an item will pass the Brussels counter

  1. Identify the item's category among the 17 listed by the Mont-de-Piété, from coins to comic books.
  2. Check the thresholds specific to the category: 0.50 carat for a loose diamond, 300 g for unsigned silver.
  3. Gather proof of authenticity: invoice, certificate, original box or CITES certificate as appropriate.
  4. Send photos for a preliminary valuation or phone the appraisal department if the item is out of the ordinary.
  5. Bring the item in good condition to the counter; a steel watch must work, a painting must be signed.
