Crédit Municipal de Toulon, an independent institution
Toulon has its own local institution, the Crédit Municipal de Toulon (CMT), rather than a mere branch attached to another city. It is a municipal public body for credit and social assistance, within the meaning of article L514-1 of the Code monétaire et financier.
Where to go with your item
The Prêt-sur-Gage service is at 83 boulevard Georges Clémenceau, 83000 Toulon. It opens Monday to Friday, from 9.00 am to 12.25 pm and then from 1.30 pm to 5.15 pm, according to the hours checked on 9 October 2026 on the institution's official website.
Head office and bank branch: two addresses not to confuse
The administrative head office at 63 rue Victor Clappier does not receive the public. The bank branch at 8 place Louis Blanc handles other transactions. To pledge an item, the right counter remains the one on boulevard Georges Clémenceau, which is dedicated to pawnbroking.
A network stretching from the Var to Corsica
The CMT has outlets in Ollioules, La Garde (Grand Var) and Puget-sur-Argens, as well as in Ajaccio, 7 boulevard du Roi Jérôme, and Bastia, 12 boulevard Paoli. It has no branch in Nice, which is served by the Crédit Municipal de Nice.
Walk-in drop-off, collection by appointment
The CMT's pawn loan page announces walk-in drop-off in Toulon, Puget-sur-Argens, Ajaccio and Bastia, whereas its branches page states that Puget-sur-Argens works by appointment. A phone call beforehand settles the question. Collecting an item is always by appointment.
Items the Toulon institution accepts
The CMT lists jewellery, silverware, paintings, works of art, musical instruments and leather goods, and more broadly any item with a value at public auction. A free valuation tells you whether something is eligible before any commitment is made.
Cars and phones are not on the list
The list published by the CMT mentions neither vehicles, nor smartphones, nor computers. A possessory pledge means the item stays stored at the institution until redemption. If in doubt, follow the method to find out whether your item is accepted as a pledge.
How much can you borrow on a piece of jewellery in the Var
The amount depends on the valuation carried out on the spot. Article D514-8 of the Code monétaire et financier caps the loan at four fifths of the weight value for gold, silver and platinum, and at two thirds of the valuation for other goods.
Rates and fees: the Tarifs 2024 schedule
The CMT refers to a document entitled Tarifs 2024 particuliers et asso. We reproduce no unverified rate from it. The contract must state the APR and the total amount payable; compare it with pawn loan interest rates in France.
ID accepted and refused in Toulon
The CMT accepts a French national identity card, a European passport or a valid residence permit, and specifies that driving licences are not accepted. The proof of address must be less than three months old and presented as an original.
People living with someone else
A person staying in someone else's home provides the host's ID and proof of address, together with a sworn statement. This case, provided for by the CMT, supplements the general list of documents required for a pawn loan.
Maximum term, auctions and surplus
The Code monétaire et financier limits the term to two years, extensions included (article D514-7). Without redemption or renewal, the item is sold at auction; any excess goes back to the borrower as a surplus (boni), and a shortfall is never claimed from them.

Common mistakes at the Crédit Municipal de Toulon
- Showing a driving licence as ID: the CMT expressly refuses it and requires an identity card, a European passport or a valid residence permit.
- Bringing a photocopy of the proof of address: the institution wants the original, dated less than three months, otherwise you must come back another day.
- Going to the head office on rue Victor Clappier, which does not receive the public, instead of the Prêt-sur-Gage service on boulevard Georges Clémenceau.
- Turning up to collect your jewellery without an appointment: collection is booked in advance and requires full repayment of capital, interest and fees.
- Confusing the public institution with a gold buyer or a consignment shop: only a Crédit Municipal may legally lend against a possessory pledge in France.
