Pawning a car in Spain: montes de piedad and the alternatives

In Spain, empeño de coche is offered by private companies: no official monte de piedad consulted accepts vehicles, and the Banco de España mainly lists shares, jewellery and deposits as pledge collateral.

What the term empeño de auto covers

In Spanish, empeñar means to pawn. Empeño de auto, or de coche, refers to a loan secured on a vehicle. The phrase circulates widely online, but it matches no offer from the official montes de piedad consulted in October 2026.

The Banco de España's definition

On its Cliente Bancario portal, the Banco de España defines the garantía pignoraticia and states that the collateral usually consists of shares, jewellery or deposits. Vehicles are not included in this list, published on 29 March 2022.

A tasación is always required

The same text points out that a professional tasación must establish the real value of the collateral. For a car, whose market value changes with age and use, this valuation directly determines the amount a lender would be willing to advance.

The CaixaBank Monte, limited to jewellery

The only official monte whose documents we have read, that of CaixaBank, offers only a préstamo sobre joyas online. How it works is set out on our page about the monte de piedad in Spain, with its four offices and its subasta rules.

Rules that leave the choice to the Monte

CaixaBank's Reglamento de operaciones in principle admits movable goods in lawful trade. Its article 9 specifies, however, that the Monte sets the accepted categories and may refuse an item. No empeño de vehículo appears in its documents.

Jewellery, silverware and art: the core of the montes

A 2022 article republished by the Fundación Ibercaja states that montes in Spain and Europe mainly accept jewellery, silverware, works of art and antiques. Cars are mentioned there as pledges accepted in Latin America, not in Spain.

Private companies in this niche

The empeño de coche offers visible in Spain come from private companies. We name none of them, for lack of an official source to verify their terms. Their status, cost and what happens to the vehicle must be examined with the contract in hand.

Keeping the car or leaving it with the lender

Before committing, you need to know whether the vehicle stays at the borrower's disposal or is immobilised, and what happens in the event of non-payment. An official monte answers these questions through its rules; a private lender, through its contract.

The alternatives described by the Banco de España

The Banco de España publishes guides on financing a car, on personal loans and consumer credit, and on loans linked to a specific purchase. These regulated products are the official references for financing a vehicle.

What about France or Switzerland?

In France, pledging a vehicle is presented as exclusive to the Crédits Municipaux of Nantes and Dijon: see car pawn loans in France. Switzerland has its own rules, described for car pawn loans in Switzerland.

Finding out whether an item can be pledged

Before approaching a monte, it is best to check that the item falls within its categories: jewellery at CaixaBank, silverware or art at other montes according to the 2022 article. Our method to find out whether your item is accepted as a pledge also applies to Spain.

Legal vocabulary worth knowing

Spanish documents speak of préstamo pignoraticio, prenda for the item handed over, pignorante for the borrower, subasta for the sale and sobrante for the surplus. The papeleta de empeño is the pawn ticket provided for in the CaixaBank rules.

Before signing an empeño de coche

  1. First check whether the need could be met by jewellery deposited at the CaixaBank Monte, the only documented official monte.
  2. For a vehicle, identify the lending company precisely, its status and any authority that supervises it.
  3. Have a professional tasación of the vehicle carried out and obtain the resulting loan amount in writing.
  4. Read the contract: total cost, term, what happens to the vehicle in the event of non-payment and conditions for its return.
  5. Compare with a personal loan or consumer credit, using the Banco de España's guides.
