The supporting documents to gather before pawning an item

For a pawn loan in France, bring a photo identity document, recent proof of address, bank details for a current account in your name, the item itself and, depending on its nature, an invoice or certificate proving that you own it.

The baseline set by Service-Public

Service-Public factsheet F1354 lists four elements: an identity document, proof of address, the item itself and, for certain goods, proof of ownership. Each institution then specifies its own requirements, often in greater detail on its own website.

Which identity document to present

The Crédit Municipal de Paris asks for a valid document bearing a photograph, presented as a paper original. In Toulon, a driving licence is not accepted as proof of identity, so you will need a national identity card or a passport.

Proof of address: three months or one year

In Paris, a new customer provides proof of address in France less than three months old, whereas an existing customer may present a document less than one year old. Strasbourg also applies the three-month limit.

Current account details, never a savings account

The Crédit Municipal de Paris requires bank details for a current account held in your own first name and surname. Savings accounts are refused, because sums above the cash threshold are paid by bank transfer into that account.

The same name on every document

The Paris institution checks that the identity document, proof of address, bank details and invoices all carry exactly the same first name and surname. A document issued in the name of a spouse or relative may be enough to block the deposit.

Invoices and certificates depending on the item

For leather goods and fashion, an invoice in the depositor's name is strictly compulsory in Paris. Strasbourg asks for an invoice and certificate for watches and luxury handbags; the specific requirements for pawning luxury handbags are covered separately.

Income: the 10,000 euro threshold in Paris

Service-Public sets no income conditions, but the Crédit Municipal de Paris asks for proof of income for any loan of 10,000 euros or more. Nîmes requests a tax assessment notice as soon as the amount exceeds 7,500 euros.

Cash or transfer: the 3,000 euro ceiling

Since 1 December 2024, Paris has paid loans of up to 3,000 euros in cash, and above that amount only by bank transfer. Its general terms also cap cash payments at 3,000 euros per day and 15,000 euros per calendar year.

Coming with or without an appointment

At the Crédit Municipal de Paris, deposits are taken without an appointment in the morning from 9am to 12.30pm and by appointment in the afternoon, Monday to Saturday. A complete file avoids a second trip, especially for items accepted by appointment.

Age and nationality: what the pages do not say

Neither Service-Public, Paris nor Strasbourg states any age or nationality condition on the pages consulted. In Belgium, the Brussels Mont-de-Piété requires borrowers to be adults or emancipated minors and resident in the European Union; see pawn loans in Belgium.

Lost or stolen pawn ticket

Under the Paris general terms of 1 May 2026, you must lodge an objection immediately, by letter enclosing an identity document or in person. The item can then only be redeemed at the end of the contract, and a duplicate costs 2 euros including VAT.

Paperwork needed for a renewal

To extend remotely, Paris asks for the contract number, which you enter in the transfer reference together with your first name and surname. The full arrangements are set out on the page renewing a pawn loan.

Preparing your file step by step

  1. Check the expiry date of your identity card or passport and do not rely on your driving licence.
  2. Print recent proof of address, such as an energy bill or tax notice, in the same name as your identity document.
  3. Ask your bank for the details of your current account, not a savings or deposit account.
  4. Find the purchase invoice, warranty card or certificate of authenticity for the item.
  5. Prepare proof of income if the planned loan reaches 10,000 euros in Paris or 7,500 euros in Nîmes.
  6. Keep safe the pawn ticket handed to you after signing, which you need to redeem or renew.

Questions about supporting documents

Do I need proof of address for a pawn loan?

Yes. Service-Public lists it among the required documents, and both Paris and Strasbourg require a document less than three months old from a new customer. At the Crédit Municipal de Paris, an existing customer may present proof dated within the past year.

Can I get a pawn loan without a bank account?

The pages consulted do not cover this case. The Crédit Municipal de Paris includes bank details for a current account in your name on its list of documents, and any loan above 3,000 euros is paid by transfer. It is best to ask the institution before going.

Do I need the invoice to pawn a piece of jewellery?

The pages consulted do not require it for all jewellery, but Paris may ask for any document proving your rights over the item. For leather goods and fashion, Paris makes an invoice in the depositor's name strictly compulsory.

Is a driving licence enough as proof of identity?

The Crédit Municipal de Toulon states explicitly that it does not accept one. It is therefore safer to turn up with a valid national identity card or passport bearing a photograph, whichever institution you choose.
