Birkin, Kelly, Timeless: borrowing by pledging a bag

A bag from a major fashion house can be pawned with a Crédit Municipal: the assessor authenticates the model, values it at public auction prices and lends 50 to 80% of that value, on presentation of the invoice or the pledger's name.

Hermès leads Paris deposits

According to Agnès Bieder-Verdenne, an expert at the Crédit Municipal de Paris, the Hermès Kelly and Birkin models come first. The Chanel Timeless, the Lady Dior and Yves Saint Laurent bags are also among the most sought after at the auction house.

The houses that best hold their value

The same expert places Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton among the brands that best retain their market value. For other leather items, such as wallets and shoes, the guide to pawning leather goods sets out the applicable rules.

How an assessor authenticates a bag

At the CMP, the examination covers stamps, inscriptions, finishes, details, stitching, lettering and serial numbers. In case of doubt, the institution consults outside experts and archives: authentication may therefore take a little time.

From €1,200 to €480: the official example

The Crédit Municipal de Paris illustrates its calculation: a bag bought for €1,200 is valued at €800 on the auction market, then gives rise to a loan of about €480, or 60% of the valuation.

Box, invoice, card: what adds value to the deposit

The Paris expert stresses that boxes, invoices and authenticity cards add value to the item. The official list adds two conditions: an unstained bag in good condition, accompanied without exception by an invoice or the pledger's name.

Bordeaux's requirements for bags

The Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux only accepts Hermès, Vuitton or Lancel bags with their invoices, ideally in their original packaging. For scarves, only Hermès and Chanel are admitted, according to its article updated in 2022.

Five 1988 Kellys at auction

In April 2023, the CMP sold five Kelly bags dating from 1988, which their owner had kept for twenty-two years, ten of them in a safe. The case is a reminder that an unredeemed pawned bag ends up at the institution's auction house.

One bag in ten sold

Again according to the expert, around 90% of loans are repaid and only one item in ten is sold, across roughly 80 sales a year. The sale rules are explained in the auction of pledged items.

APR applied to a valuable bag

If the loan on a Birkin or a Kelly exceeds €6,000, the Paris scale displays an APR of 5.30%. Between €501 and €6,000, the displayed rate rises to 9.90%, including a 1% storage fee.

Choosing to sell your pawned bag

Paris allows the borrower to request the sale of the item three months after deposit and up to thirty days before maturity. If the hammer price exceeds the debt and the 15% fees, the excess remains available to the borrower for two years.

Luxury bags in Belgium and Switzerland

In Brussels as in Geneva, other establishments lend against pledges under their own national law. The differences in rates and documents are presented in the guide to pawning a luxury handbag in Switzerland.

Excluded materials and trims

A bag featuring fur, ivory, elephant hair, or big-cat claws or teeth will be refused in Paris. Bordeaux also rules out coral: check the decorative details before presenting yourself at the counter.

The journey of a pawned bag

  1. Find the invoice, authenticity card, box and dust bag, then check that there are no stains.
  2. Book an appointment at the Crédit Municipal with your bag, identity papers, proof of address and bank details.
  3. The assessor examines stitching, stamps, lettering and serial number, consulting archives or an outside expert if needed.
  4. Receive the valuation based on recent hammer prices and the amount offered, then accept or leave with the bag.
  5. During the loan, pay the interest to renew, or request a voluntary sale after three months.
  6. Repay principal and interest to collect the bag, at the counter or through the online repayment service.

The pitfalls of a pawned luxury bag

Your questions about pawned luxury bags

How much does the Crédit Municipal lend on a Hermès bag?

No scale per model is published. The bag is valued according to prices achieved at public auction, then the Crédit Municipal de Paris lends 50 to 80% of that valuation. A Kelly or Birkin in good condition is among the highest-rated models.

Can a Chanel bag be pawned without an invoice?

In Paris, the invoice or the pledger's name is compulsory; in Bordeaux, bags from major houses are only accepted with invoices. Without proof, the deposit is likely to be refused; call the institution to find out which alternatives it accepts instead.

How does the Crédit Municipal check that a bag is genuine?

The assessors examine stamps, inscriptions, finishes, stitching, lettering and serial numbers. They may consult outside experts and archives. A box, invoice and authenticity card make this check easier and improve the valuation.

Is a Louis Vuitton bag accepted as a pledge?

Yes: Louis Vuitton is among the houses that best hold their value according to the Paris expert, and Bordeaux names Vuitton among the bags admitted with an invoice. The bag's condition and its original accessories influence the amount lent.
