Pledging your laptop: where the rules stand

Pledging your laptop: where the rules stand

Pledging a computer in France remains exceptional: the Crédit Municipal de Paris does not list it, Bordeaux refuses old computer equipment, and Nantes, which accepted it in 2016 if less than a year old, no longer mentions it on its current page.

The 2016 Nantes article

On 18 October 2016, the Crédit Municipal de Nantes published "Your computer can be deposited as a pledge". The central condition: the device had to be less than a year old. The documents required were valid ID, proof of address and the invoice for the equipment.

What the current Nantes page shows

On the pawn loan page of Nantes, computers now only appear in the meta description. The text lists gold jewellery, watches and clocks, silverware, works of art and collectables, and asks for the purchase invoice "as far as possible".

Bordeaux rules out old computer equipment

The FAQ of the Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux refuses old computer equipment. A laptop a few years old, even in good condition, is likely to fall into this category, and the institution publishes no acceptance rule for a recent model.

Nothing on computers in Paris

The list of accepted items of the Crédit Municipal de Paris, on rue des Francs-Bourgeois, mentions no computer, desktop or laptop. Only games consoles sold up to 2000 represent the digital field on this Paris list.

Toulouse and connected devices

The Crédit Municipal de Toulouse accepts "connected devices" without listing them. A recent laptop could qualify, but nothing guarantees it: the institution invites you to call about any item outside the usual categories.

Why age matters so much

A computer loses a large part of its resale value in its first years, and the appraiser reasons in terms of the likely auction price. That is probably the logic behind the one-year criterion set in Nantes and Bordeaux's refusal of old equipment.

Invoice and ownership

The invoice proves both the date of purchase and ownership. Nantes asked for it in 2016; Toulouse may require an invoice less than six months old for certain items and reserves pledging to outright owners.

Wiping your data before the deposit

The device stays on the institution's premises for months and may end up at public sale if unpaid. Backing up and then resetting the computer, and removing any personal account, protects your data if the machine is sold at auction.

Interest and extension in Nantes

In Nantes, interest is calculated pro rata for each month started and each extension lasts six months. The renewal of a pawn loan involves paying the interest due, and the total term remains limited to two years by article D514-7.

When the borrower goes silent

If it hears nothing, or at the borrower's request, the Nantes institution proceeds to sell the contract. If the price exceeds what is still owed, the positive balance is returned as a surplus (boni), as at every Crédit Municipal.

Legal cap on the amount lent

For a computer, as for any item other than gold, silver or platinum, the loan cannot exceed two thirds of the valuation under article D514-8. On a mid-range laptop, the sum obtained therefore remains modest.

Comparing with other devices

The conditions for televisions, consoles and connected objects are gathered under pawning electronics, those for phones under pledging a smartphone. In every case, a prior telephone confirmation is essential.

Institutions consulted on computers

Before depositing a computer

  1. Check the purchase date on the invoice: a device more than a year old has little chance of being accepted.
  2. Telephone the nearest institution, Nantes or Toulouse for example, to confirm that it still takes computers.
  3. Back up your files, sign out of all accounts and reset the computer to factory settings.
  4. Bring the computer with its charger, box and invoice, then have it valued by the institution's appraiser.
  5. Sign the contract, keep the pawn ticket and plan to pay the interest before each six-month due date.
  6. Repay to recover the computer, or let the institution sell it and claim any surplus.

Questions on pledged computers

Can a laptop be pledged?

Only at certain institutions and under conditions. Nantes accepted computers under one year old with an invoice in 2016, Toulouse accepts connected devices, but Paris does not list them and Bordeaux refuses old computer equipment. Call before you travel.

Is a MacBook more readily accepted than another computer?

No institution consulted publishes a brand-specific rule for computers. The known criteria concern age, invoice and ownership. A sought-after brand may improve the valuation, but guarantees neither acceptance nor an amount.

What papers are needed to pledge a computer?

According to the 2016 Nantes article: valid ID, proof of address and the invoice for the equipment. Other institutions generally ask for the same documents, plus bank details for paying out the funds.

What happens to my computer if I do not repay?

The institution sells it. In Nantes, the contract is sold if there is no word from you or at your request; if the price exceeds the debt, the surplus (boni) is returned to you. Remember to wipe your data before any deposit.
