A contract signed by an individual
Article D514-1 of the Code monétaire et financier authorises the institutions to lend against a pledge to any natural person. The general terms of the Crédit Municipal de Paris as of 1 May 2026 specify that the contract is signed by the individual who benefits from it.
No payments from the company account
The same general terms require the funds to come from a personal account and refuse payments made by companies. A manager of an SARL or SAS therefore repays from their own account, even if the money was used for the business.
Business equipment: refused in Bordeaux
The Crédit Municipal de Bordeaux excludes specialised business equipment from its pledges. Machines, tools or technical equipment specific to a trade therefore cannot serve as security there, whatever their purchase value.
What the manager can pledge privately
The manager can, however, deposit personal items of value: jewellery, watches, silverware or works of art accepted by the institutions. The loan, granted without an income requirement according to service-public, can then be put into the company as a shareholder current account contribution.
Speed, but a capped amount
The appeal for an entrepreneur is speed: valuation on the spot and immediate payment, with no review of the balance sheet. The trade-off is a cap of two thirds of the valuation, or four fifths for gold, set by article D514-8.
Weighing the cost against an overdraft
The Crédit Municipal de Paris displays an APR of 9.90% from 501 to 6,000 euros and 5.30% above that, according to its page updated in September 2024. Compare these pawn loan rates with the cost of a business overdraft.
Professional microcredit in Toulouse
The Crédit Municipal de Toulouse offers professional microcredit. Its "Prêt Pro" sheet showed a fixed rate of 9.75% as of 1 January 2023, a figure not rechecked in 2026. Its personal microcredit ranges from 300 to 8,000 euros, over 3 to 84 months.
The non-possessory pledge for businesses
A company can secure credit with a non-possessory pledge over its assets while continuing to use them. Registration goes through the official Cerfa form no. 13347*01, and a separate form allows it to be renewed when it expires.
A single register of security interests
Ordinance no. 2021-1192 provided for a single register of security interests over movable property, freely searchable online, and allowed all security interests to be concluded electronically. For vehicles, see pledging a car and its specific register.
Leasing, financial rental, hire purchase
Banque de France sheet 415 lists equipment leasing under article L313-7, financial rental, which is not subject to banking regulation, and hire purchase. These formulas finance equipment without requiring an asset already owned.
Lease-back and back-to-back leasing
The same sheet describes lease-back, where the company sells an asset and then rents it back, as well as back-to-back leasing. For premises, these arrangements take the place of a pawn loan, which is impossible on property as a pledge.
At the origin: a social assistance mission
Since the Act of 15 July 1992, the institutions have held the status of municipal public bodies combining credit and social assistance. Pawn lending remains designed for private individuals; within the network of Crédits Municipaux in France, Toulouse also offers professional microcredit.

Using a pledge when you run a business
- Separate personal items of value, which can be pledged in your name, from company assets, to be financed by other tools.
- Deposit the personal item at the institution with your own supporting documents, not the company's.
- Receive the funds in your personal account, then put them into the business in the legal form agreed with your adviser.
- Repay interest and capital from your personal account, as payments made by companies are refused in Paris.
- For a lasting equipment need, look at professional microcredit, leasing or a non-possessory pledge with an authorised institution.

What the institution asks of the manager
- Your personal identity document, not a company registration extract (Kbis)
- Your personal proof of address
- Bank details of a current account in your own name
- Proof of income from 10,000 euros borrowed in Paris
- Information on the origin of funds for anti-money-laundering purposes
- Invoice or proof of personal ownership of the item deposited
Entrepreneurs' missteps with pledges
- Offering a company machine or tooling as a pledge, when Bordeaux refuses specialised business equipment.
- Repaying from the company's bank account: the Crédit Municipal de Paris refuses payments made by companies.
- Pledging an asset that appears on the company's balance sheet as if it belonged to you personally.
- Confusing equipment finance through leasing with a pawn loan, when the asset is never handed to an institution.
- Using a pawn loan to cover a lasting cash shortfall, instead of financing suited to the business.
Questions from freelancers and managers
Can a company obtain a pawn loan?
No, according to the texts and published conditions. Article D514-1 covers natural persons, and the Crédit Municipal de Paris has the contract signed by the individual beneficiary, refusing payments from companies. The manager can borrow in their own name.
Can a micro-entrepreneur take out a pawn loan?
Yes, as a natural person, with personal items of value and their own proof of identity and address. Specialised business equipment is still refused in Bordeaux. The loan is granted without an income requirement, solely on the valuation of the item.
What alternative to a pawn loan is there for a business?
Professional microcredit, such as that of the Crédit Municipal de Toulouse, a non-possessory pledge registered by Cerfa form, or the techniques described by the Banque de France: equipment leasing, financial rental, hire purchase and lease-back.
Can business equipment be pledged?
Bordeaux expressly excludes it, and the other lists consulted only cover everyday items of value such as jewellery or works of art. To secure credit on equipment you keep using, the non-possessory pledge is the tool designed for the purpose.
