No vehicles at the Geneva office
The CPPG explicitly excludes cars, motorcycles and bicycles. As article 6 paragraph 2 of the LCPPG reserves professional pawnbroking in the canton to it, pawning your car in Geneva is impossible; see car pawn loans in Switzerland.
Electronics and household appliances excluded
Smartphones, computers, televisions, games consoles and household appliances appear on the list of refusals published by the CPPG under electronics and household appliances. The office publishes no exception for a recent device, whether new or still under the manufacturer's warranty.
Clothing, furs, shoes and glasses
Even from a major label, furs, clothes, shoes and glasses are refused in Geneva. The contrast with leather goods is clear: a Hermès bag in excellent condition may be accepted, while a coat from the same house will not be.
Furniture, antiques and antiquarian books
The CPPG accepts neither furniture nor antiques, nor antiquarian books. Only works by identified Swiss artists, worth at least CHF 1,000, open the door to a pledge for art, after an external appraisal agreed in advance.
Wine collections refused
A cellar of fine wines cannot serve as a pledge at the Geneva office: wine collections are expressly among the refusals. No exception is made according to the stated value, unlike rugs, for which the office mentions a deposit for appraisal.
Shares, bonds and company holdings
The CPPG refuses financial securities: shares, bonds and company holdings. Geneva law nonetheless mentions "certain securities" in its article 6; in the practice published by the office in October 2026, these securities are not taken at the counter.
Silver plate and non-compliant jewellery
Silver plate is refused, except complete Christofle sets, and jewellery is taken only in gold or platinum. A sterling silver 925 or gold-plated necklace will therefore be handed back, even if it bears the signature of a well-known designer.
Coloured stones and undocumented diamonds in Zurich
The ZKB Pfandleihkasse does not accept coloured stones, such as rubies, sapphires or emeralds. Diamonds and brilliants are admitted there only with a certificate; for jewellery, it is the weight of precious metal that determines the amount.
Dirty or unusable items
Clause 2 of the ZKB's 2021 general terms limits pledges to saleable and usable items. The office asks for cleaned pieces in working order; a quartz watch that has stopped must be fitted with a new battery before it is deposited.
A refusal that needs no justification
The CPPG states that "the service may refuse any item without justification", and the ZKB reserves the same right in clause 2 of its terms. Clause 15 also forbids pawning a Versatzschein, the Zurich pawn ticket.
Refusals linked to the person, not the item
An eligible item may be refused because of the depositor: in Geneva, minors, people under guardianship or in personal bankruptcy, companies and G-permit cross-border commuters are excluded; the ZKB rules out minors and people lacking capacity (clause 3). You must also be sole owner.
What remains possible
Before giving up, look at the items accepted as pledges in Switzerland: gold jewellery, coins, watches, luxury bags. The items accepted as pledges in France follow other lists, and the guide to pawn loans in Switzerland covers the cantons.
Institutions and their refusal rules
- Caisse publique de prêts sur gages (CPPG): Publishes the Geneva list of refused goods: vehicles, electronics, clothing, furniture, wine, financial securities.
- Pfandleihkasse der Zürcher Kantonalbank: Refuses coloured stones in Zurich, as well as items that are not cleaned or not in working order.
Avoiding a refusal at the counter
- Compare your item with the CPPG list of refusals before any trip to Geneva.
- Check the metal of the jewellery: no silver, no plating, only gold or platinum.
- For a diamond in Zurich, find the certificate; without it, the stone will not count.
- Clean the item, test that it works and replace the battery of a quartz watch.
- Make sure you are the sole owner and meet the residence and permit conditions.
- For an item not on the list, call the office rather than turning up unannounced.
Refusals and alternatives by category
| Refused category | Institution | Option mentioned |
|---|---|---|
| Cars, motorcycles | CPPG Geneva | Authorised lender outside Geneva, e.g. Bern framework art. 14d HGV |
| Bicycles | CPPG Geneva | Accepted at the ZKB if recent, branded and with a receipt |
| Coloured stones | ZKB Zurich | Not accepted as pledges by the Zurich office |
| Silver plate | CPPG Geneva | Complete Christofle sets only |
| Electronics, wine, furniture, securities | CPPG Geneva | No alternative published by the office |
Documents that prevent an avoidable refusal
- Official identity document
- Residence permit accepted in Geneva (B, C, F, L, N or S)
- Diamond certificate for the ZKB
- Invoice for a luxury bag
- Invoice or certificate for a watch worth over CHF 5,000 in Geneva
- Purchase receipt for a recent bicycle in Zurich
Frequent misunderstandings about refusals
- Thinking a private lender can take your car in Geneva: the CPPG monopoly prohibits professional pawnbroking by anyone else.
- Believing the label is enough: a luxury jacket or glasses are still refused, unlike four brands of bags.
- Presenting shares or bonds on the strength of the mention of securities in Geneva law, when the office refuses them.
- Asking for the reasons behind a refusal in the hope of an appeal: both offices may refuse without justification.
- Mistaking the public office for a gold buyer: the ZKB Pfandleihkasse makes clear that it does not buy items.
Questions on refused pledges in Switzerland
Can a phone or computer be pawned in Switzerland?
Not at the Geneva CPPG, which refuses electronics and household appliances. The ZKB Pfandleihkasse does not list them among accepted items either, its list being limited to jewellery, certified diamonds, precious metals, watches and bicycles.
Can a car be pawned in Geneva?
No. The CPPG refuses cars, motorcycles and bicycles, and cantonal law reserves professional pawnbroking to it. No other institution can therefore legally offer a car pawn loan in the canton of Geneva.
Why does a public pawnshop refuse an item?
Because the item is not on its list, is not saleable or usable, the supporting documents are missing or the depositor does not meet the conditions. The CPPG and the ZKB also reserve the right to refuse without giving a reason.
Is silver jewellery accepted as a pledge in Switzerland?
Not as jewellery: the CPPG and the ZKB take only gold and platinum. Solid silver is accepted in Geneva in the form of silverware hallmarked 800 or Minerva, coins or bars, and the ZKB accepts silver coins and bars.
